A lot of more difficult tasks are done by machines. Machines perform microsurgery, make nano-sized computer chips, they can make knives, no ancient masters nor special esoteric abilities or superpowers required.

The origins of the techniques used to make Damascus steel are indeed ancient and trace back to the broader region that includes Iran. However, the specific techniques for creating the steel known as "Damascus" or "Damascene" steel were most directly developed from wootz steel, which originated in India. The knowledge and techniques spread across the Middle East, including Persia (modern-day Iran), where local metallurgical practices could have influenced or been influenced by these innovations. Thus, while Iran was a significant historical center for metalworking and contributed to the development of advanced metallurgical techniques, the direct origin of Damascus steel is more commonly attributed to the Indian subcontinent.

Why buy an expensive knife if the only benefit youll get is the pattern. For me, Japanese knives are superior and worth every penny

I wish I had a Demascus knife, forged with the craftsmanship from this knife production, creation of Japanese, and German knives. This way, I would get the highest, most perfect knife in the world, both in durability, sharpness, and the design, with the soul and dedication of three different history and cultures. Even better, a Japanese Katana with this kind of production. It might cost over 100,000 for the knife and at least 5,000 for a knife, but having three different culture styles being utilized to create the perfect knife would be worth it.

They are expensive, but people are dumb enough to think they are real Damascus knives. Damascus knives are made from steel mined and forged in India, shipped to the city of Damascus and then forged into knives. BTW, the formual for wootz Damascus steel was lost in the 19th century and NOBODY has been able to recreate it since then.

I own a hand made Damascus steel flip blade made by MCUSTA and the handle is cherry wood and has a cherry tree blossoming for the design and I can 100% confirm that they are HELLA sharp from cutting my finger

What an incredible nonsense. 50 tons of CO2 emissions just to impress your rich friends with a fancy pattern on the knife that you never use, all because you need to compensate for your small wnr.

BTW, scientists have no idea how damascus steel was made. This knowledge has been forgotten. So guys, please, it is not damasus. It's just a layerd steel that looks cool.

Iv'e been doing this for 12 years. I've made over 10,000 blades through my shop, Monolith Knives in that time. You don't need to be a Master Smith. You just need to be a good designer, story teller, and technically proficient artisan. It is an art form but not terribly different than furniture making, jewelry making, glassblowing, or other metal craft. It is hard work though.

This is a classic example of overpriced fad. Good quality high carbon steel blade will be better overall, and unlike pattern-welded blades, it will not rust.

Is Damascus a quality or just a type/style (swirls & sharpness)? Curious because from what I've heard nobody has ever been able to reproduce a true Damascus steel knife or sword like originally forged in the 13th century or so. If it can't be reproduced how is it be able to be called a Damascus? That's kind of like building a Ferrari yourself that looks and handles like a Ferrari but just is not a Ferrari. You can call it whatever you want but it is still not authentic.

@Widur42 2 месяца назад
The etching does NOT cause oxidation. The different colors are the result of different phases in the two different steels.
@Widur42 2 месяца назад
Just to be clear, these "fun" or "artistic" patterns are really beautiful, but they do not provide a sharpness increase per se. The point of damascus to merge softer and harder steel to combine the effects of shatter resistance (higher ductility) with high hardness (lower ductility). If you cut with the softer of the two materials, the edge will wear down quicker. Thats why normal damascus knives usually have a single continuous core and damascus layers on top. If you just mix the two steels to create these patterns, you don't get all the benefits of damascus. So there is a trade-off between looks and performance. Traditional japanese damascus knives usually have very simple and similar damascus patterns to get the most out of the blade.
