He’s been doing it for 15 years? And he’s not a young man. Be interesting to see someone who’s been doing this for a long time to do this. I imagine none of them were wanting to speak on camera.

Damn. Imagine diving all that way with no scuba gear in the ancient world

Aren’t murex snails endangered and protected? In ancient Israel, you WANTED to expose it to light to get the deep blue for talit. Meninx? They named a town membrane?

It was so costly that only roman elites and emperors could afford it. That's why purple signifies royalty even to this day. French , holy roman emperor also used them.

Can't they eat the flesh of the snail after extracting the snail gland?

When she wanted to impress Marc Anthony, Cleopatra famously went to meet him on a gilded boat which had purple sails. You saw how much work and resources went into making this one silk scarf in the video? Imagine how much it would have cost to use that dye for the sails of a ship! There is no way to properly convey the debauchery of wealth that the queen of Egypt was displaying in doing that. A boat with purple sails would the equivalent of a private jet entirely bedazzled in 10 carats diamonds. Something utterly outrageous and conspicuous.

Being well-off can make one senseless. He probably is just in the upper middle class, yet look at what he is doing with his money. Imagine millionaires and billionaires.

The lengths people will go for vanity...  In the Elizabethan era (1558–1603), under Sumptuary law, enforced by Queen Elizabeth I, purple fabrics were forbidden for all the classes of people except the royal family.  Considering the amount of dead creatures and labor paired with the standoffish elitist behavior, not to say evil, that does not sound very classy at all to me. The purpose of purple... Tyrian tyranny and the irony.

This dye was so expensive it was more valuable then gold in ancient times. It is associated with with royalty and opulence, in Japan there was a purple dye that came from a plants roots, but that too was associated with royalty.

Disgusting, harvesting live creatures for your sick paint. I don’t give any sympathy to Art made of needlessly killed animals. You kill it, you eat it, you make joke paints out of it; I call you a failed Artist.

Tyrian Purple is my favorite color. I've loved purple since my earliest years of life and Tyrian has such a mystique to it, worn by royals and legends, and the curiosity of who the first person was to figure this out. I know the legend involving Heracles, but the reality of it is so interesting.

0:55 _”makes it so hard to make and why is it expensive?“_ YOU JUST TOLD US! It takes 100 lbs of snails to make 1g of dye

Natural resource preservation is very important in this type of product, as if these species weren't maintained as well as they should be, they're gonna extinct. It is also important to keep the demand in check because it can _really_ affect one's greediness, which could also lead to the species' extinction.

ok it takes a lot fo snails and time to make. but why does it have a price tag of 3000 dollars for 1 gram? what is the appeal of it? what does it do that a synthetic cant? is it truly just the snobbiest thing in the world? 3000 bucks for something that can be made for pennies sythnetically, with no real improvement over the synthetic counterpart
